Dark themes can feel cinematic, but they also amplify every spacing and contrast mistake. The key is to treat negative space as a primary design element, not an afterthought.
Start with contrast that breathes
Aim for layered contrast rather than maximum contrast. Use muted whites for body copy, reserve pure white for headings, and keep accent usage intentional so the eye knows where to land.
Let motion guide, not distract
A subtle fade and slide is enough. If every card animates, nothing feels special. Choose one or two moments that reward attention.
The most elegant interfaces feel like they are breathing, not blinking.
Checklist before you ship
- Test with 80-90% text opacity for long-form copy.
- Keep accent usage below 10% of the visible area.
- Add 4-8px more spacing than your instinct says.
